Thanks for joining me as I discover how to enjoy meals without cane sugar! I started looking at all the cane sugar I eat – After every meal, I needed sugar. I ate bags of candy as we drove to Orange County. It was all cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup. I don’t drink alcohol but I “sugar” everyday. People tend to limit alcohol, but I wasn’t limiting “sugar.” So I decided to give up cane sugar and limit myself to fruit sugar.
It was horrible the first week, Valentines week, but after 3 weeks, I am enjoying the challenge and it’s not hard at all now that I am over the first week. A light in the tunnel was the fact that Necco did not make hearts this year as they went out of business : ( They are my favorite snack, so around Valentine’s Day when I started, I didn’t have to stare at boxes of those. My husband send me flowers. Hurray!!
My wonderful husband of 44 years has and still does all of the cooking, but since I really want to try no sugar, I am learning to cook also. So far I’ve cooked scrambled eggs and made a no bake dump cake. Not much, but it’s a start.
After 3 weeks, I don’t crave cane sugar. I have even lost 4 pounds, which was not my goal, although it’s nice. I am getting lots of sugar, just not cane sugar or corn syrup. I enjoy just drinking water now, whereas before I had to put some cane sugar drink in it to enjoy the water. Our grandsons, 14 and 16 are here after school most days and they prefer the Dole 100% juice over the Hawaian’s Own Orange/Mango concentrate with the same amount of sugar. I assume cane sugar. It’s more expensive, but I assume it’s better and they don’t seem to drink as much. I do mix both with extra water. The Dole won’t take as much water as the Hawaian’s Own but still taste as good as the Orange Mango concentrate with added water.
It’s hard to find foods without sugar. Reading every label gets annoying and tiring. That’s why I started this blog, so I could remember what I ate and liked and help others.
Dinner is easier to avoid sugar, except for condiments. I haven’t yet tried Ketchup without sugar. Ketchup has always been one of my staple and favorite foods, so we’ll see.
